the
YEAR
We were born into this. As a city, as one people, we own it. We revel in it. It’s rarely been fun and it certainly hasn’t been easy, but it’s always been there. It’s a part of who we are.  We’re the affable losers, the perennial bridesmaids, and the very definition of not-quite-good-enough. Our grandfather’s grandfathers have the same stories of heartbreak that we do. We’ve found comfort in ‘almost.’ No more. No goats, cats or Bartmans. This is our year. This is THE year. This year, the streak ended.

GREATS
Our phenoms. Our heroes, and ultimately, our scapegoats. This is the Mt. Rushmore of Cubs baseball; the Italian beef or celery-salt-on-a-hotdog of our version of the national pastime.

Imagine if Ron & Ernie could see us now.

TRADING GUM FOR AN ISLAND
Shortly after World War I, the chewing-gum magnate purchases Santa Catalina Island, 26 miles off the coast of South California for, $3 million. The previous owners sold it long with their Wilmington Transportation Company as a package deal. Each Wilmington ship flew the blue flag with the white W.

CUBS TRAIN AT THE ISLAND
The Cubs move spring training to Catalina Island. The team takes the SS Avalon from Wilmington to Catalina Island. With a ballpark built for them, the Cubs would travel to the island for spring training from 1921-41 and then 1946-51.

the 'w' comes home
"There were a lot of changes to the park...the building of new bleachers, a new outfield wall, a new scoreboard — the flying of a new flag apparently didn't warrant a mention with so much else going on,"
